Short tail - 'Keyword' Long Tail - 'This is your keyword'
Short is a just one or two word.. Long is around 4-5 words. Always choose the latter.

Using Long Tail Keywords can be highly beneficial for you for its targets the exact or specific keyword. There will be less competition. Short tail keywords means it have lovely competitions to reach front page to google not that much simple and even for hard keywords it will take ages to reach front page.

Long tail keywords – will bring in less traffic to your site, but the traffic it does bring is very directed and your chances for a sale, rental etc is relatively high.
Short tail keywords – more general keyword phrases that have a large amount of traffic, but due to its’ undirected nature, conversions, sales, etc are low.
